Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare (S.E.S.A.W.) Leavenheath, Suffolk.
S.E.S.A.W. is a registered charity No. 1124029, devoted to the rescue, care and rehoming of any needy animal, wild or domestic. Those who cannot be rehomed are either fostered or cared for at the sanctuary. We do not put any animal to sleep due to its age, ill health or otherwise, unless advised to by our vet and only then, in the best interests of the animal.

Many animals pass through our doors - cats, dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, peacocks, foxes, pigs, sheep, even a llama! We work independently, but assist other charities if required. The animals we take in come from many sources, local vets, social services and members of the public.

Castledon Greyhound Rescue Wickford, Essex
Castledon Greyhound Rescue provides a sanctuary and re-homing service for Greyhounds in need in the UK. Greyhounds come to us as retired racers, as strays, and from owners who give up their dogs due to changing life circumstances such as: relocation, financial hardship, divorce, illness, or death. Castledon Greyhound Rescue provides the dogs with veterinary care, spay/neuter, vaccinations, good quality food, love, and placement into a home for life under a contract that dictates their humane care. Greyhounds are now becoming very popular pets - people are more aware of their plight and of course, what fantastic pets they make.

- Contrary to popular belief, they don't require much exercise - two 20 minute walks per day is sufficient.
- Greyhounds have the most fantastic temperaments
- They adore human company
- Are extremely affectionate
- Are gentle, docile and loving
- Excellent on a lead
- Quiet dogs that rarely bark
Greyhounds are commonly referred to as 40 mph couch potatoes!

We do not have as many dogs as other kennels which means that we can really get to know our dogs personalities, likes and dislikes. Because of this, we like to think that we can offer you a more personalised homing process. Should you decide that a Castledon Greyhound may be the dog for you, we will arrange to meet you and do a home-check BEFORE you meet the dogs.

If you have seen a dog you like, and think you might be able to offer it a home you need to visit the dog at the kennels. You can take it for a walk and see how you get on. If you have children, or another dog, we recommend that you bring them with you, to make sure that everyone will get on. Although we make every attempt to keep this website up to date, if you're interested in a particular dog, we recommend phoning the kennel before you leave to check the dog has not already been rehomed. Please be aware, however, that we are unable to reserve a dog over the phone.

Once you have visited the dogs, and hopefully found one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, a member of staff will arrange a convienient time for a home check. These are usually carried out within 2 or 3 days of your visit and take about half an hour. Once the home check is complete, you will be able to collect your dog. You will need to bring with you some identification showing your current address, and the adoption fee. It may also benefit you to bring a lead and collar, but if you do not have one, we do have a number available for sale at the kennels.

At Acres Way, we are sometimes able to take these dogs into our kennels, and find new homes for them. This gives the dog a greater chance of finding a new home - we are visited by a large number of people each week looking to adopt a dog, and are often able to match dogs to new owners within a short period of time. This is far less stressful on the dog in the long run.

Our ability to take in dogs for rehoming is dependant on the number of kennels we have available at the time - space is limited, and we are required to keep a number of kennels free for any strays that may be found by the council. That said, we will always endevour to do our best to help you, should you find yourself in this difficult situation. Please note, that due to limited kennel space and resources, a fee is charged for this service. If you feel you may need to rehome your dog, please call the kennels on 01268 770402 between 10AM and 3PM and ask to speak to Sue, Cheryl or Vikki.

Essex, Lincolnshire and Trent Boxer Rescue Wickford, Essex
There are many reasons why boxers come into rescue, often through no fault of their own. Most Boxers come to us due to marriage break ups, the rest are because of a mixture of ignorance, death of owners and misunderstanding of the breed. Whatever the reason we are only to happy to help as the welfare of boxers is our only priority. We always do our homework first and match the dog to thier new forever family. We never have dogs to view! Every home is thoroughly checked out and once anyone adopts a boxer from us they become part of this ever increasing boxer family. We never lose touch. We ask for photos and updates from every new home periodically, and we send out news letters once a year. We have a Funday once a year when all new owners and their beloved dogs are invited to take part in a super day out. This is our main fund raising event of the year thus enabling us to continue the good work. We are solely funded by donations and administered entirely by voluntary helpers, without whom LETBR would not be what it is today.

National Animal Welfare Trust Thurrock and South West Essex - CATS ONLY
The Thurrock and South West Essex branch of the NAWT was formed in 1977, originally as a fundraising group, but within months the volunteers realised that there were many animals in the area needing homes. Since those early days the branch has found homes for thousands of unwanted cats and dogs besides helping many animals. The dogs are vaccinated, neutered and micro chipped, wormed and had flea control before being re-homed. All the cats we re-home are neutered at six months, micro chipped and have been wormed and had flea control. We ensure that all kittens homed from us are also neutered at the appropriate age. There are always more cats and dogs in care than we can show on the website, and invariably we have a list of cats waiting to come into care. Cats needing homes.

RSPCA Danaher Animal Home, Wethersfield, Braintree, Essex
The RSPCA Danaher Animal Home, whilst being affiliated to the RSPCA, is run by an independent Trust and has been helping unwanted, badly treated, neglected and abandoned animals since 1990. The Home takes in and re-homes around 1,400 animals per year (400 dogs, 450 cats and 550 others - mainly rabbits, hamsters, and other 'small furies') although there is an approved euthanasia protocol for any animal that does not have any chance of a quality life. The number of dogs shown above will increase when the new kennels (see below) are opened. However the Home needs to be adaptable as in 2007 a raid by police and the RSPCA meant around 500 small animals and birds plus over 500 terrapins arrived in one day. Accommodation had to be found for these both at our Home and other Homes in the area. The home now consists of a new modern kennel block built in 2007 and a second modern block is currently under construction. With the isolation kennels this will give accommodation for around 70 dogs. The cattery gives accommodation for 36 cats with a new isolation block being built, hopefully in 2008. A small animals barn, rabbit house, surgery and reception area complete the site. Funding comes from re-homing fees, donations, fund raising, grants and legacies.

RSPCA Havering Romford, Essex
RSPCA Havering looks after many animals. It helps to treat them with medical care and attention but what many of our animals need more than anything is a new owner to love and look after them. If you would be prepared to consider giving a new home to an unfortunate dog, presently being cared for by RSPCA Havering in a local Kennel, then please consider one of our dogs. We are in great need of volunteers to help us with the re-homing of cats and dogs. Help with cats is especially needed. oluntary work is very rewarding and any reliable volunteers who also have transport would be much appreciated. If you are interested in more information about any of our dogs please contact us at 01708 381 822. Area: Havering, Harold Hill, Romford, Upminster.

RSPCA Essex South & Southend Branch Rayleigh, Essex
The Essex South & Southend branch of the RSPCA, in common with all local branches is separate and independent from the parent charity, i.e. the National RSPCA. The easiest way to understand this structure is to think of it in terms of a Franchise. There are over 160 Branches of the RSPCA and every Branch is slightly different from its neighbours. They operate their own animal welfare programmes, which run 'in tandem' with the National Society. Each branch raises its own funds and manages its own affairs. The branch has five paid staff to run our three shops and our van service. This is backed up by a number of volunteers. We raise funds to continue to pay for the private boarding and veterinary care of animals brought in by RSPCA Inspectors which are then re-homed by the Branch. Please visit our cat and dog adoption pages if you would like to consider adopting one of the rescue animals in our care. A home visit is always undertaken by our volunteer home checkers to ensure a good match is made between the animal and its potential adopter. Branch volunteers also work hard raising funds to support our assisted neutering scheme which enable people on low incomes to meet expensive veterinary bills. Towns/villages in the Branch area include: Asheldam, Bradwell on Sea, Burnham on Crouch, Canvey island, Castle Point, Cold Norton, Eastwood, Hadleigh, Hawkwell, Hockley, Hullbridge, Latchingdon, Leigh, Maldon, Maylandsea, Mundon, Prittlewell, Purleigh & District, Rayleigh, Rochford, Shoeburyness, South Benfleet, South Woodham Ferrers, Southchurch, Southend on Sea, Southminster, Steeple, Thorpe Bay, Thundersley, Westcliff. German Shepherd Rescue South Fareham, Hampshire
We are a small rescue that re-homes unwanted German Shepherd Dogs throughout the home counties. The rescue is a non-profit organisation and is run entirely by unpaid volunteers, we rely on donations from sponsors and the general public to keep the rescue running. Our aim is to keep dogs in their own home, if possible, until a suitable new home is found or to place a dog in a foster home.

All dogs that come into our rescue are fully assessed before they can be put up for adoption, this involves an experienced volunteer visiting the dog in his home and assessing the dogs temperament. This allows us to match and place a dog in the correct environment.

We also take dogs from the pounds that are in danger of being euthanised. Generally these dogs have to go into private kennels to be assessed before they are placed in foster/permanent homes. Our funds for caring for the pound dogs are very low, please help by making a donation. Big or small, every penny counts.

Dogs needing homes. To adopt one of our dogs a homecheck will be carried out by one of our volunteers and certain criteria must be met, please see our adoption page.
